Collaboration with Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM)

Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) or Malaysian Maritime Academy is a maritime training academy in Malaysia. The main campus and training centre are located in Kuala Sungai Baru, Melaka. Since 1977, the academy promotes training for seagoing personnel. In 2013, ALAM entered into negotiations with CLT to with a view to conduct an external evaluation of teaching delivery to Identify the training needs of the ALAM trainers.

ALAM’s representatives, Capt Lee Ghim Teck and Puan Kazlina Kharib Shah visited UTAR, Kampar on 15 Sept 2014 to have a preliminary meeting with CLT consultants. ALAM appointed CLT officially as the project consultant on 22 April 2015, via the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and the consultancy and research agreements.

The CLT team carried out the consultancy project from August to October 2015. The team members were Dr Cheah Phaik Kin, Dr Priscilla Moses and Ms Winnie Er Pek Hoon, who were the three consultants. The team was supported by five student assistants. The evaluation was conducted among trainers in ALAM, Malacca. The initiative provided an independent review and assessment of the teaching delivery by ALAM trainers to complement ALAM’s Trainer Advancement Scheme (TAS).

The purpose of the project was to improve the quality of teaching delivery by addressing the individual trainer’s specific training needs. The overall achievement of teaching excellence would contribute towards graduate employability and employer satisfaction. The project aimed to evaluate the teaching delivery and identify training needs of individual ALAM trainers.

The CLT team met up with the top management of ALAM on 23 October 2015 to present its Pilot Test findings, and from there, both parties expressed mutual desire to have a long-term collaboration and relationship. CLT has to date completed Phase 1 of the consultancy and research projects. Phase 2 is pending, wherein CLT is expected to run a series of training workshops for ALAM trainers.
